some advice? kinda stuck in a rut

    It won't help if you're just on the net most of the times. You will never improve like that. Just be more approachable. Finding the right topic to talk about is not that hard, just talk about anything - could be ur daily things, or funny things happen in the day, or some rant you might have... I am sure the other person would appreciate it.

    do u know mandarin or cantonese i mean u could try and improve on msn or something i mean u wont embarass yourself cuz u wont be face to face with them and ill bet ppl on this forum would luv to help u out. i know what it feels like cause im in hong kong as an exchange and i only came out of my shell by playing bball arcades and talking about stuff like manga. small talk yep yep yep.

    watch more movies with subtitles??? that helped me pick up the language a lil faster... good luck

    If you can't think of something to say, just ask questions, people love talking about themselves, and maybe that person will mention something that you have in common, and you can talk about that. Or you could talk about current events if that's not boring for you--read the newspaper.

    one of the things that's going to be hard is if you don't feel at ease with your chinese. A lot of times since you don't really speak the language you think you are looked at funny and they will make fun of you or something. just take your time and talk to the person being shy is a hard thing to overcome. if you play sports or like to go out and do a activity or something then you might be able to find a group of people to do that with. being in a group makes things a little easier so you don't always have to rely on yourself to talk. you can listen and try to reply to things as much as you can.
