Swine Flu... Really Not A Big Deal.

Torontonians will soon be making a choice for themselves and their families:

Get the vaccine for the pandemic H1N1 flu when it becomes available in a few weeks or take a chance – between 30 and 50 per cent of people are expected to get H1N1 by the time the pandemic is over (i believe this applies to Toronto), and in that group there is the possibility of complications resulting in hospitalization, or even death.

Although most cases so far have been mild, there have been 79 deaths in Canada since last spring. "Most people can recover just by staying at home" and doing the usual things to combat flu like getting rest and enough fluids, says St. Michael's Hospital family physician Karen Weyman.

and to answer the 2 posts above, no she got a regular flu shot, its a given outta every medicine/treatment there will be those in the very low risk that will suffer some kinda complication.

Risk of serious illness

"In 1976, when an American manufacturer was making a vaccine for swine flu, there appears to have been a risk of about one in 100,000 of Guillain-Barré syndrome (a disorder in which a person's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system).

"As soon as we said this (pandemic H1N1) was a swine flu, everybody got their knickers in a twist. Every year, we make new flu vaccine and theoretically it is possible that one manufacturer will make a vaccine that is associated with a rare but non-zero risk you'd want to worry about. But the risk of flu is still greater."

Side effects

"You can have an allergic reaction to the vaccine including a sore arm at the site of the injection. The most common side effect is red, puffy eyes and sore, scratchy throat for a couple of hours," says McGeer.
The vaccine does come with some risks, acknowledges McGeer, but they're lesser than the risk of getting the flu with the possibility of complications.
Most convincing reason to get it: Weyman's observation that it's hard to predict who, among otherwise healthy young and middle-aged people infected by the H1N1 virus, will experience life-threatening complications.
McGeer sums it up succinctly: "For $3.22 (the cost to government for the vaccine), I can stop you from dying from flu."

if/when you get done over by your vaccine you wont be able to sue or get compensation because the government passed a bill that makes them immune to it after what happened during the last swine flu rubbish:Talktohand:

I don't take the vaccine as well if I catch the H1N1, I am sure the doctor will give me Tamiflu to fight for the disease.

in the previous pandemic, they made a vacine due to rush and those people who had it, well some or alot had severe side effects..
