Lawl, one time I had a guest in my room and his feet was stinky !! yuck it was so bad I wished I could tell him to put his shoes on.

^ No, it depends on the family... I know friends (all white) who walk right in with their heels on... but then it's okay because I live in an apartment, so not too worried about snow and grim.

Plus, it's bad etiquette (for Western society) if I insist on guests taking off their shoes =_=b

What a jerk for ignoring you, I suggest laying down something to protect your carpet next time this happens. Not sure if it's customary, but when I was in Quebec we took our shoes off, then again they were all old school Asian families.

Indeed, this is right that in an asian house , before come in ppl should take off their shoes.... but some ppl are like forgot the thing that they are not in asia country!! but in occident..that mean different manners and different culture..what for us is normal, for them it's just stupid...
And then u should post something in front of ur door, explain the fact why u need they take off their shoes before they entry into ur house....

The trades people who come to our home to do repairs I've observed, always wipe their shoes on the mat before they come in . They also take off their shoes without asking when they see a carpet esp. when going into the bedrooms.

Why don't you post a sign by your door telling people to take off their shoes b4 they come in. I think this definitely work. My relative used to come in and smoke in my house. After I posted up a no smking sign, he quit doing it.

maybe the guy was shy? okay, not shy but i guess didn't want to impose on you and wasn't sure of what to do so instead of asking you just went right in since you didn't specify/say anything?

a cable guy even stepped onto my chair with his shoes on! I think it depends on how clean a person would care to be.

This happened to me too, but the cable guy said his company policy that would not allow him to take off his shoes due to safety sake and he apoligized. (I guess they're afraid I sprinkle glass on my carpet for kicks). So I thought it was nice of him but he left foot prints too. Pretty lame....
