Hey guys!!

By now you're probably aware that the Rudd Government are planning on filtering the internet for every Australian. And I'm sure that you are aware just how bad an idea it is. If you're not, check out our previous post on the subject. Anyway, if you want to let the Government know what a bunch of tossers they are being by proceeding with live trials, even when all the closed trials results should have shouted out in big red letters: "THIS ISN'T GOING TO WORK", the GetUp.org is calling for you to sign their petition. I know, petitions are a bit of a nothing way of demonstration, but considering the massive push GetUp are putting behind their efforts to thwart the Government's filtering program, it can't hurt to add your name to the list. And it might actually make a difference.

NSW students to get promised laptops

EVERY senior NSW public school student will get to keep a mini laptop after a new funding deal was thrashed out at yesterday's Commonwealth-state funding talks in Canberra.
Some will receive their custom-built computers, powered by a wireless broadband network, by the end of term two next year, with the State Government planning to seek expressions of interest from manufacturers as early as Wednesday.
The successful tenderer will produce laptops based on a prototype already developed by IT experts in the Education Department. Students will be able to keep their computers after they leave school.
The funding breakthrough came after months of bitter fighting over the Federal Government's offer of $1 billion to the states to fulfil federal Labor's election promise to give every year 9 to 12 student a computer.
NSW angrily boycotted the federal program in October after joining other states to claim the Commonwealth funds represented only one-quarter of the cost of buying, installing and maintaining the computers.
But the breakthrough in negotiations yesterday means NSW students will soon add a lightweight laptop to their schoolbags after Premier Nathan Rees secured sufficient funding to finalise a massive bulk buy with a computer company.
The Federal Government has coughed up an extra $3.55 billion in education funds to the states.
Mr Rees immediately pledged that NSW would lead the country by providing 197,000 senior public school students with the specially designed teenager-friendly computers.
Half the state's public high schools would have wireless internet connections by mid-2009, he promised, signalling the start of the laptop rollout. Mr Rees told The Sun-Herald NSW would receive $200 million from the Commonwealth for computers in public schools - and offered the other states and territories the chance to join NSW in a huge computer spending spree.
"We're ready to push the button to seek market players as early as Wednesday and we can help other states get on board by being the national broker for the deal."
He said the economies of scale in such a big enterprise would reduce the $2245-a-student cost further.
"NSW stands ready to deliver teenager-friendly, custom-built laptops to the nation," he said.
"These custom-made laptops are about three-quarters the size of a regular laptop - compact enough to fit into a schoolbag or a locker but powerful enough to support all the IT needs of our high school students.
"We can deliver the digital revolution by putting wireless networks in every public secondary school and buying a laptop for all the 197,000 students in years 9 to 12."
The partnership agreement to deliver the computers in schools programs includes funding for independent private and Catholic schools.
Mr Rees said he would welcome those schools buying computers through the public sector program.
As the laptops run on a wireless network, there was no need to build expensive computer labs or banks of network servers.
At a press conference with all state and territory leaders yesterday, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the extra funding for education came with strings attached.
A "new era" of public transparency in reporting was needed from schools across the country.

Yay! The pollies finally agree on something. And we get to keep them to, Now all we have to do is wait for them to follow through, and some wireless networks and laptops are distributed to my school next year! (No hard feelings 08 grads?)
