I personally find cable management to be one of the most difficult aspect to building a PC. even with the thinner cables now. Its hard to make it look clean.
plan ahead..... run cables that need to cross the motherboard like the case's built in usb ports UNDER the motherboard..

Yeah. Use a flat surface and smooth surface. A floor tile would be great. Tape the sandpaper to it to keep it from sliding around. Remember to lap the heatsink as well. Use LESS thermal paste than you normally would. Difference is quite large (few degrees Celsius). Tried it on my brother's old P4 rig. If it ain't broke, rub it against a piece of sandpaper. Hahaha.
