Focus Accepts NC-17 Rating for Lust, Caution

Variety says the MPAA has given Ang Lee's Lust, Caution an NC-17 rating, and Focus Features has accepted it.

The erotic espionage thriller, co-written by Focus CEO James Schamus and Wang Hui Ling, will screen at the Toronto festival, then bow in New York on Sept. 28, as scheduled, and expand to additional markets on Oct. 5.

Based on Eileen Chang's short story about a shy Chinese drama student drawn into an assassination plot against a Japanese collaborator during WWII, the Mandarin-language pic is one of the studio's big hopes for the upcoming awards season. Tony Leung and newcomer Tang Wei star.

Focus screened the final cut for the MPAA late Wednesday afternoon and accepted the rating the same day.

"As with so many of his previous films, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has crafted a masterpiece about and for grown-ups," Schamus said.

Although the MPAA has yet to detail the reasons for the rating to Focus, the film does depict extended — and vigorous — lovemaking from a variety of provocative sexual positions, including full female frontal nudity.

It will hurt the film in revenue, but I still think it'll be received well here. Ang Lee is a great filmmaker and I expect this film to be an Oscar contender for best foreign film.

I hope that it'll be considered for an Oscar based on the film's merit and NOT Ang Lee's reputation.. regardless, I'll be happy cuz it'll give Western audiences another look at Tony Leung! -clapclap

Well, I read that Ang Lee was reluctant to edit "Lust Caution" to have the rating lowered. But I have faith in Ang Lee's direction and Tony Leung's acting (not to mention Aileen Chang's backdrop storyline)

Can't wait to see it at TIFF!!!

Wow.. the movie def sounds like it should be rated NC-17.. I'm kinda surprised that the actors/actresses agreed to some of the scenes.. but I guess when you're a professional and the plot/director calls for it.. you have no choice.

Adpating from a short story (same title) by the famous Chinese author Eileen Chang, because a college student Wang Jiazhi (Tang Wei) was missioned to kill a Chinese collaborator with the Japanese (Tony Leung), she became his mistress from an innocent student. However she found that she had fall in love with him.

In the movie, Tony Leung and Tang Wei had scenes where they exposed their pubic hair. Aftering screening, over-sea media described Ang Lee's skill as outstanding, the sex scenes in the movie were understandable. But they don't understand well to the perplex thinking of Shanghai wife played by Joan Chen. It was rumor that Tony Leung had suffer a lot for this film. Yesterday he clear this rumor saying he was just tired because at the same time he needs to film "Confession in Pain" and learn Mandarin.

In addition, Tony Leung said that it was his first time watching this movie after filming. When talking about his sexual performance in this movie, he said, "I'm very pleased. As a professional actor, I'm fine with those scenes." When director Lee was asked that is Tony Leung and Tang Wei were actually "doing it", Ang Lee asked back, "Did you watch the movie yet? If you have, why did you still ask me this question?"

Some media said that aftering watching "Lust, Caution", they're sure that Ang Lee is not homosexual. That is because his direction for "Brokeback Moutain" is too good, it was once rumor that Ang Lee loves man.

hmm..tony leung seems to be really good at those very sexual movies.

even tho his gotten so many awards as proof of his acting talent, i can't say his ever grown on my at all.

but then i suppose his films target an older audience.

and LUST, CAUTION...i never really liked period pieces.
but i'm curious to see it. n check out leehoms acting as well!!

I trust that Tony and the director knew what they were doing.. BUT I'm not sure how I feel about seeing Tony in his birthday suit..

So how does the public opinion perceive Tony Leung's nudity in the film? Was it a necessary part of the script? Or was it only demanded by Ang Lee to increase the media's attention? If the Director for "Lust, Caution" were Wong Jing instead, then would the film become pornographic?

The Hong Kong premiere of "Lust, Caution" was a star-studded event, including the attendance of Chow Yun Fat, Zhang Ziyi and other international stars. Chow Yun Fat gave the film a 99.9 score, while other guest viewers gave it a 100 score. Just watching Tony Leung and Tang Wei's passionate scenes were fulfilling enough!

Director, Ang Lee, noted that he originally thought of casting Zhang Ziyi as the female lead in "Lust, Caution." However, when Tang Wei, auditioned for the role, Ang Lee was attracted by her ordinary looks. He felt Tang Wei was very suitable for the role.

Apparently the whole world focused on Tony Leung's private parts or how intensely passionate his bed scenes were with Tang Wei. Many female movie viewers watched the movie to satisfy their curiosity about Tony's nudity. Perhaps this was also one way to sneak a peak at naked celebrity bodies?

"Lust, Caution" is a period spy thriller that takes place in World War II China. Was the film sexually gratuitous or artistic in nature? Over 50 people were polled and the following results were found:

* 44% of respondents said that Tony Leung's exposure of his private parts was a publicity tactic employed by the film company. They felt Tony's nudity was unnecessary.

* 38% of respondents felt that "Lust, Caution" warranted artistic merit. They felt that Tony's nudity was a suitable artistic sacrifice for the film.

* 28% of respondents did not find Tang Wei to be beautiful. But they found her to possess a unique air about her. Acting counted more than looks and audiences found her more suitable for the role rather than Zhang Ziyi.

*88% of respondents said that Director Wong Jing's movies were cheap and pornographic. However, Ang Lee's movies were artistic and his sex scenes were necessary for the film. Perhaps there is only a fine line between being cheap or artistic!

Ticket sales for "Lust, Caution" in Hong Kong have topped $3.66 million (HKD) since its opening earlier this week. The movie was shown at 60 theater screens and became the top-seller during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday week and broke a historical records as one of the strongest box office openings in September.

Box office sales have been equally strong in Taiwan. Since "Lust, Caution" opened on September 26th, box office sales have surpassed $8.75 million (HKD).

The following few female viewers expressed their intention on whether they will be watching "Lust, Caution:"

Ms. Yue: "A lead actress doesn't have to be beautiful. As long as she can act, that is fine. However I want to watch this film mainly because of Tony Leung. I believe this will be a good film."

Ms. Lee: "Ang Lee is already a well-known brand. On the other hand, Wong Jing is cheap. I am interested in this film because of the whole story. I am not seeing it because of the love scenes."

Mr. Wong: "I am not interested in watching 'Lust, Caution!' There are no CGI scenes, no action scenes. I'll just wait for the DVD!"

Ms. Lui: "This movie has a too serious air about it. I am interested in watching lighter comedies. Although Tony Leung may have a breakthrough performance in this movie, I am not interested in watching it."

In Director Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" 《色，戒》, Tony Leung Chiu Wai was rumored to have had real sex with co-star,Tang Wei, in their love scenes.

Tony's girlfriend, Carina Lau Ka Ling praised Tony's performance in "Lust, Caution." Responding to rumors that Tony had "real sex," Carina believed that due to the presence of a production crew and numerous out-takes, it was difficult for Tony to "enjoy" the sex scenes.

Allegedly, Tony was in a foul mood after filming "Lust, Caution." This was due to his inability to extricate himself from his character.

However, in an interview with the British media, Tony assumed a different position and said he greatly enjoyed the filming of "Lust, Caution." He also said that the love scenes were necessary.

In the past, Tony often portrayed good-looking, yet flawed characters. His role in "Lust, Caution" was a departure from his past characters. He felt extremely fortunate in working with renown Director, Ang Lee. To prepare for his role, Tony studied the performances of Hollywood actors such as Humphrey Bogart and Marlon Brando.

Tony noted that his love scenes in "Lust, Caution" were the most sexually graphic performance in his career. During the filming, Ang Lee, Tang Wei, and Tony discussed and practiced the scenes thoroughly. This understanding benefited the actual filming in order to achieve the proper camera angles.

In an earlier online Taiwanese poll, Tony was voted as "The Most Sympathized Lover." This was due to the fact that Carina Lau had high profile rumors with tycoon, Kwok Toi Ming. Thus many netizens sympathized with Tony.

Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" can't qualify for the major categories at the Hong Kong Film Awards - a major honor in Chinese-language cinema - because not enough Hong Kong residents worked on the movie, a news report said Thursday.

The news comes after Oscar organizers rejected the spy thriller as Taiwan's entry for best foreign film, because not enough Taiwanese took part in making it.

Lee, who won best director Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain" last year, hails from Taiwan.

The much-hyped "Lust, Caution" is about a sexually charged relationship between an undercover activist (Tang Wei) and the Japanese-allied intelligence chief (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) in World War II ERA Shanghai.

The award qualification problem is a product of filmmakers from different parts of the Chinese-speaking world increasingly working together.

Cheung Tung-joe, a member of the Hong Kong Film Awards voting affairs committee, said "Lust, Caution" is not eligible for major categories at the event in 2008, like best film or best director, China's Information Times newspaper reported Thursday.

The Hong Kong Film Awards event is open to movies that meet at least two of three requirements: a Hong Kong director, a Hong Kong film company and at least six Hong Kong residents among the key creative talent.

Cheung was quoted as saying not enough Hong Kongers worked on the film.

"Lust, Caution" is partly funded by Hong Kong's Edko Films Ltd. and lead actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai is from Hong Kong. But lead actress Tang Wei is mainland Chinese, Director Lee and script writer Wang Hui-ling are Taiwanese, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto is Mexican and composer Alexandre Desplat is French.

However, Cheung said the film, which has earned millions of U.S. dollars (euros) at the Taiwan and Hong Kong box office, qualifies for the best Asian film prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards, which is open to non-Hong Kong movies.

Calls to the Hong Kong Film Awards Association went unanswered. A publicist for the organizers did not immediately respond to a reporter's e-mail seeking comment.

The movie's recent problems in meeting film award requirements stem from a growing integration in the Chinese-speaking film industry. It is common for Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan to pool resources and talent.
Commenting on the trend, Lee recently told Taiwan's CTI Cable News: "With Chinese-language films, their production systems and audiences are spread out wide."

The best-known Chinese-language film honor is Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards, open to all Chinese-language movies. "Lust, Caution" has qualified for that event, scheduled for Dec. 8 in Taipei.

The Chinese-language "Lust, Caution" was nominated for Best Foreign Language film Friday by the 65th Golden Globes in Los Angeles.

The award ceremony is slated for Jan. 13, 2008.

Along with "Lust, Caution," four other films were also nominated as Best Foreign Language films. They are "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" (Romania), "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (France), "The Kite Runner" (U.S.), and "Persepolis" (France).

Directed by Ang Lee, "Lust, Caution" was shot outside U.S. and partly produced by foreign entities, but was financed and distributed by U.S. companies.

World War II film saga "Atonement" earned seven Golden Globe nominations, including one for best drama, to lead the pack of movies vying for a key Hollywood honor in the widely watched awards season.
