i have one very common phobia and that is i can`t stand all these annoying bugs. .......these awful insects are driving me crazy!!!
For you peachy..*sighhhhh* We can only hope.. Lol, seriously though, it doesn't really matter how many times a person fails as long as they don't give up. Almost anything is possible.
Judge not lest ye be judged? Did I say there is nothing to fear? Don't jump to conclusions guy.. I'm scared of sharks, bee's, and basically anything that can eat me alive. Does that mean I'm going to let it affect my life? Personally I like swimming at the beach and I'm not going to let a shark tell me what I can't do; unless I saw one in the water of course. Now a "dumb" person might want to pet the big fishy. Keep that in mind. Now do I think they're weak? If they can't overcome their fear, sure. They're weak minded cause they can't overcome a thought. Every one takes risks everyday either by crossing the street or plugging in an electric appliance or just by stepping out of the shower so why focus on that one phobia and let it consume their lives? I saw this one lady in a show once that was scared of fishes and basically cowarded down and cried at their sight but by the end of the week she was walking around in a little pool filled with fishes bare footed. A weak minded and less determined person would have given up the second they saw those fishes. Shoot, actually I'm a little scared of spiders and anything creepy crawly but is that going to stop me from walking over and killing it?
wow, rotfl, anything is possible huh?? you have phobias too, its a natural human instinct. and actually not everything is possible.
Which was why he said "almost". Well, some of the 'silly' phobias can be overcome with numerous exposures to the fear. Certain other fears... I don't understand how people can't fear them, like sharks, you must be out of your mind if you don't fear them. Even ZBT fears sharks (though interestingly, contrary to you, he conquered it ). Hm.. I think the most interesting phobia on this list would be the fear of long words because it can actually cure itself. I mean, if you tell 100 people the name of your phobia, surely you'd be cured.
Thanks for the thorough listing of phobias. They can come and go at different stages of life. Recently, I,m very sensitive to strong perfumes-esp when they are sprayed in the morning when I'm still in bed. To me they smell like tobacco smoke and it gets me very irritated and angry!
Altophobia- Fear of heights. Cacophobia- Fear of ugliness. Didaskaleinophobia- Fear of going to school. Entomophobia- Fear of insects. Pedophobia- Fear of children. Peladophobia- Fear of bald people. there could b more... too many phobias there...
"Your statement implies that people should fear nothing, since they can overcome all fears." (Keep in mind we're still talking about people with phobias.) So are you telling me that if a person with a phobia or phobias has fully confronted their fear/s and completely understands why they fear what they fear that they'd still be irrationally scared of it? And no I did not imply that people should fear nothing. I was saying exactly what you read. People with phobias just don't understand their fear/s and most of the time arn't thinking rationally and if they had a good and rational understanding of what they feared then they'd realise it was silly to let it dictate their lives. "It's not as easy to overcome fears as you make it out to be. "And fears are perfectly justified." Are you talking about phobias or are you talking about just fears in anybody's everyday life because it sounds like you're straying away from the topic. But even if you are talking about people with the "common" fears, the same rules apply. Confront and overcome them but keep in mind I'm not saying, " Hey if ur scared of getting hit by a car then just go out get hit already and overcome it", no, I'm saying understand all the factors and mistakes people make when they're hit by a car and come to a rational conclusion. "Take your phobia of sharks for instance. Sharks can be dangerous and that's something that you can't deny, and that may be a fear you shouldn't overcome." Why shouldn't I try to overcome the common fear of sharks? Now I'm not saying jump in the ocean with a great white with no cage around you cause even the most experienced and seasoned of divers and scientists won't do that. I'm saying jump into a controlled environment and literally face your fear then hit the books and maybe learn a thing or two about these misunderstood predators. And, swimming with sharks sounds like fun, why not? (<~ rhetorical question) I mean, that's like saying why cross the street if you're scared of getting hit by a car or why go out into the rain if you're scared of getting struck by lightning. You control your actions and you control your fears and you need to understand that unless you can look into the future and plan out your entire life step by step you will most often be at the jeopardy of other peoples actions/repercussions when you step out that door. Just try not to be too gung ho and stupid about it obviously. Finally, lets take a scenerio that alot of people can relate to like the shredding machine that's in ur kitchen sink that requires a switch to be turned on and most of the time is just too damn far away for you to feel safe about when ur reaching down there. You know you have to pull it out but the fear that you cannot manually control that switch at that very same moment scares the sh!t outta you but you still have to get it out. What do you do? You put ur hand down there, confront ur fear, and pull that spoon out. Also, can you explain to me why my previous post isn't a valid and justified statement. To nirvana and thomas, I think peachy responded to your post perfectly; I couldn't have said it better myself. Thx peachy. =D
