In my opinion it is a language/culture related issue. If you are a native chinese speaker living in a standard chinese enviroment then: 1) View numbers in their nature base value ( example 54= five tens four , etc) 2) You will be exposed since tender age to base 2 numbers : payoffs of majong are in base 2 -> 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 .... 3) Parents factor: they would beat you if you dont study hard.
Chinese are good at math for several reason: 1) Parent are practical, they don't see their kids making money majoring in arts and literature. They rather have their kids doing computer science, accounting, and engineering which all require math. 2) The Chinese had the abacus before the calculator
Not all Chinese people are good in math, I think its a stereo type. Look at some of my friends for example. Half of them are in the higher math classes, and some of them are in the "sped" math section. But then again, I hear from one of my friends that the stuff we learn in high school now is the stuff people in China learn in elementary/ middle school.
If you are born outside of China or Hong Kong, then you might not be great at math. I have friends who are born here in the US and followed the NYC education, and they do suck in math.
Chinese people at my school generally raise the whole average thing. And most of us take math lessons on Saturday too xD
Dude, totally agreed... Not that Westerners are not smart... But it's seems like westerners are better @ the artistic side whereas chinese or asians are better in terms of logical stuff like maths...
westerners are smart as well...the Top guy at maths in my grade is White...and hes Top 5 in Australia as well....OMG
That's awkward. Go Math haters! *brick'd* I dislike Math to an extent but I'm more interested in History and Writing... actually, Art in general.
i love maths but i love sc too.. but i think maths is easier becos we just need to memorize a few formulas and not some bulk stuff. at the very most it's more of how we r being brought up
Chinese people are good at maths, and overall school in general, because we value education. It has been this way since Confucian times.
hhahah iono bout the majong reason but i agree fully with the "parent factor" hahaha bad grade would equal a bad night :\ -noclue
Some people think its stereo type that chinese people are very good at math but Chinese people acually are smarter .....half because of strict parents but i believe chinese are natural smarter and more advanced brains! ^^
I totally have the answer ... It's because ..... WE ARE THE BOMBDIGGITY -sorc I DON'T know why I put the little sorceror smiley, I just like how it looks -^_^ -tongue2 Yeah .. I don't know the answer. But I do believe it is because of the parents, they just make us believe that math is SUPER important. But not EVERY Chinese person is good at math .. like ME. Well I'm pretty good at most of the stuff, just a little confused on those 15 step geometric proofs -ohmy
I really found maths as a subject boring, but did reasonably well. I think today,my maths has tremendously improved alot....From the Casinos! Something i don't recommend to you guys out there!
i grew up in Canada so math was never really emphasized here but I still ended up doing good in math. maybe it's in the chinese "genes" ________ OG KUSH SEEDS
Totally agree. If you can't do math, you can't play majong well. In Canada, you can use calculators starting in Grade 5 or 6. My parents encouraged us not to use it. You know what I mean by encouaging. Not allow. Maybe that is why.
I hate math so much, only class I got a 75 in......ever. I WAS good in science until 8th grade but I still manage to get 90 averages overall. I'm better in History and English.
