$245 for the top tier octo-core...That's pretty cheap. I paid around that much for my entry level i7 a few years back.
Also forgetting that the amount of stuff that fully utilizes that many cores is pretty low. At the moment this is benchmarking about on the same level and slightly above the 2500K. It's not being pushed to theoretical limits. I would wait a bit longer for thorough testing to pick up. This isn't a huge leap in terms of upgrades if you're using Phenom II quad cores or hex cores for now.
I fail to see any need for anything beyond a Quad-core. Most applications and day to day usage really only uses 1 thread. Unless you actually encode video, run multiple VM's, and other cpu intensive tasks then your money is wasted.
Tons of people do things like that professionally or not. It just boils down to the budget and are there any foreseeable support for it in the future. A lot of people are enthusiasts and just pick up newer stuff.
